AI in Healthcare: A Helpful Tool or a Risk? – Student Voice

Capital City College teamed up with AI Awareness Day to give students an opportunity to participate in shaping the future of technology and education. Bibiana M shares her perspective on artificial intelligence and healthcare

Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a part of our daily lives, particularly in healthcare. As a patient, I think it is important to understand both the benefits and risks of AI because health decisions impact lives.

AI helps doctors analyse X-rays, scans, and images quickly, aiding earlier disease detection. Research from King’s College London shows AI can identify breast cancer from mammograms accurately. AI could also create personalised medications, supporting better patient care.

However, AI has limits. Medical conditions vary due to genetics, environment, lifestyle, and healthcare access. AI learns from data that may not represent all populations, making individualized treatment risky if the data is misused. Many seek AI health advice before consulting professionals, risking misinformation.

Additionally, automating simple tasks may weaken our skills, risking brain health. Some argue AI makes healthcare safer and more efficient, while others insist medicine should rely on human expertise and direct care.

I believe AI should assist, not replace, healthcare professionals, combining technology with ethics, responsibility, and compassion.
