Simple Conversations That Build Safe Habits
This intervention framework references recognised UK education guidance — including Department for Education (DfE) generative AI guidance for schools, Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) expectations on pupil data, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and Ofqual assessment integrity guidance, and Ofsted expectations for safeguarding and curriculum quality. It supports school self-assessment; it is not legal advice and does not imply official endorsement or compliance certification.
Why This Matters
The best protection is not blocking AI — it is regular, open conversation. Children who talk about AI at home make safer, smarter choices with it.
You do not need technical knowledge. You need curiosity and a few good questions.
How to Start the Conversation
Be Curious, Not Worried
Ask your child to show you the AI tools they use. Let them teach you — it keeps the conversation open and honest.
Ask Open Questions
Good conversation starters:
- Which AI tools do you and your friends use?
- How do you know if what it says is true?
- Has AI ever got something wrong?
- What would you never share with it?
Talk About Feelings, Too
Ask whether anything they have seen online or through AI has ever made them uncomfortable, and remind them they can always come to you.
Keep It Going
One chat is not enough. Little and often works best — in the car, over dinner, whenever it comes up naturally.

Speak to your child's school if you have concerns about:
- AI-generated bullying or deepfakes
- Inappropriate content
- Academic honesty
- Privacy or safety
