Student AI Privacy Guide

What not to share with AI tools — names, photos, school details and more.

Stay Safe and Private When Using AI

This intervention framework references recognised UK education guidance — including Department for Education (DfE) generative AI guidance for schools, Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) expectations on pupil data, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and Ofqual assessment integrity guidance, and Ofsted expectations for safeguarding and curriculum quality. It supports school self-assessment; it is not legal advice and does not imply official endorsement or compliance certification.

Why This Matters

AI tools often save what you type. Once you share something, you may not be able to take it back.

Protecting your privacy keeps you safe online — and AI does not need your personal information to help you learn.

Keep These Private

Never Share

Keep these to yourself:

  • Your full name
  • Your school, address or phone number
  • Passwords or logins
  • Photos of yourself or others
  • Anything about friends or family

Think Before You Type

Ask yourself: would I be happy for a stranger to read this? If not, do not type it.

Tell a Trusted Adult

If an AI tool asks for personal information, says something that worries you, or shows something inappropriate, tell a parent, carer or teacher.

Before You Use an AI Tool

Check:

  • I have not shared my name or where I live
  • I have not shared photos or passwords
  • I would be okay if a stranger read this
  • I know which adult to tell if something feels wrong

Improve Your Benchmark Score

This framework supports improvement in:

  • Privacy Awareness
  • Online Safety
  • Responsible AI Use

Remember

AI does not need to know who you are to help you.
