Translate your DfE Alignment Score into a maturity band — and a prioritised set of interventions for governors and SLT.
Purpose
Turn benchmark scores into a leadership narrative.
This intervention framework references recognised UK education guidance — including Department for Education (DfE) generative AI guidance for schools, Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) expectations on pupil data, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and Ofqual assessment integrity guidance, and Ofsted expectations for safeguarding and curriculum quality. It supports school self-assessment; it is not legal advice and does not imply official endorsement or compliance certification.
Why this matters
Governors, trusts and Ofsted ask for evidence of responsible AI adoption — not a single percentage in isolation. Maturity bands link benchmark data to action.
Maturity bands
0–25 — Emerging
Ad hoc AI use; limited governance. Priorities: adapt the DfE AI policy template, DfE Compliance Checklist, leader benchmark.
26–50 — Developing
Policy in progress; uneven practice. Priorities: School AI Governance Framework, AI Risk Register, staff verification CPD.
51–75 — Established
Documented controls; improving awareness. Priorities: Annual Benchmark Review, parent sessions, safeguarding refresh.
76–100 — Leading
Evidence-led culture; annual review cycle. Priorities: national benchmark data, AI Champion Programme, MAT roll-up.
