Helping With Homework in the Age of AI
This intervention framework references recognised UK education guidance — including Department for Education (DfE) generative AI guidance for schools, Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) expectations on pupil data, Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and Ofqual assessment integrity guidance, and Ofsted expectations for safeguarding and curriculum quality. It supports school self-assessment; it is not legal advice and does not imply official endorsement or compliance certification.
Why This Matters
Children now have instant access to AI that can answer almost any homework question. Used well, it supports learning. Used badly, it replaces the thinking homework is meant to build.
You do not need to be an AI expert. A few simple habits at home make all the difference.
Helping the Right Way
Attempt First
Encourage your child to try the work themselves before opening any AI tool. The struggle is where the learning happens.
Use AI to Understand, Not to Finish
It is fine to ask AI to explain a tricky idea. It is not fine to have AI write the answer to hand in.
Ask the Magic Question
A simple check at the end of homework:
Did AI help you think, or did it do the thinking for you?
Check the School's Rules
Different schools allow different things. If you are unsure when AI is permitted, ask your child's teacher.
Signs AI Is Doing Too Much
Gently check in if your child:
- Finishes quickly but cannot explain the work
- Reaches for AI before reading the question
- Hands in work that does not sound like them
